Journey To Self - An African Story

Journey to Self: An African Story

How we decide to confront our inner fears is the person we become. This debut African contemporary novel by E.K. Ndanguzi, tells the story of Jonathan's journey.

Jonathan is 30 years old. He is intelligent and hardworking and does everything he is supposed to do but nothing seems to be working out for him. He has a job that pays very little and he cannot get a better one, making it difficult for him to support himself as well as his alcoholic mother and brother who he loves dearly. Why can't he catch a break? He cannot help feeling directionless and uncertain about his future. It’s a feeling he has had since childhood. Then loses his job…

Jonathan's girlfriend, Emilie, is a successful lawyer who comes from a wealthy family. She is also the woman of his dreams. It therefore shocks more than just Emilie when Jonathan suddenly ends the relationship after only six months. It is, however, something Emilie's best friend Beatrice had said would happen. Beatrice also holds on to a dark secret of her own…

E. K. Ndanguzi’s novel has a cinematographic dimension to it which makes the scenes and the dialogues move before the reader’s eyes. This vividly visual and kinematic novel depicts the inner landscape of a character that, as with everybody else, is blinded by fear from his experiences growing up.
