Ocean in a Drop

Miraj Hussain remembers the moments when her mother admonished her for being too stubborn. She was always told that good girls were created to obey. In her native land of Pakistan, this was a lie that almost everyone believed. But Miraj couldn't bear living the lie.

As she and her brother Asad grew up in their father's stifling household, they became more and more disillusioned with Sadiq Hussain's religious hypocrisy and favoritism toward their older brother, Adam. While Miraj couldn't keep her opinions to herself, Asad suffered from secrets of his own. He could never tell his traditional father and brother that he was gay. There was no life for him in Pakistan.

Now the two have traveled far from their homeland to start new lives in the United States, but it isn't as easy as they dreamed it would be. The Hussain siblings face new prejudices, bigotry, and hypocrisy in their adopted country. As they navigate their way through an unwelcoming society, they must examine what they truly want in their lives. Along the way, they will discover that the obstacles to their happiness don't just lie within Pakistani and American cultural conventions but within themselves.

The Vicissitudes of Fortune

Five teenagers from diverse backgrounds are brought together by a war. A Japanese, a Jew, a Native American, an African American, and a white kid from middle-class America form an interdependent relationship in the jungles of Vietnam. They become the most highly decorated squad in a war they don’t understand, but their relationships transcend the social structures of racism formed through historical injustices, and they remain best friends for decades. Their iconic leader, Billy Stone, one day finds himself entangled with a Medicare scam dreamed up by his sister’s husband. For his sister’s sake, he must find a solution. The livelihoods of the others form within the law enforcement communities in their individual and collective quest for justice as they grow from boys to men of great character. Even the strongest of character has its flaws, but these men are the best of the best, and there is only one adversity they cannot overcome. From the Selma-to-Montgomery march, the internment camps of WWII, the poverty and desolation of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation; to the estrangement of a father and son and a suicide of great consequence, this team of five becomes one. At the same time, there are “takers” like Billy’s brother-in-law who infect the American system. They need to be brought to justice, but the price will be high. On the smallest of scales, this is an epic tale of how the dream of a world community can become a reality.

Books of the Week - July 30, 2017 - Readers Rock

Book of the Week - July 30, 2017

Life wasn't so great when you didn't have much of a relationship with your parents or the ability to play street games while growing up in the fifties. You would rather be secluded in your lonely room, using your imagination to write stories and draw comic books than to be drowned in negativity by your mother or humiliated by your peers. All of this can change for Jimmy Yadenik when he meets Johnny, his soon to be mentor and member of the Vandals, a street gang, and he applies for membership. But the transition won't be easy.

Are you looking at your life through positive thinking?

After facing a lot of negative relationships and/or being accused of being a negative source, I felt the need to do a thorough selfexamination by looking at myself in the mirror to see where my faults were. I needed to discover how I could include this self-examination in my daily walk without being sidetracked. I needed to stay on a positive track and move to the next level in life. I needed to stop slipping through the cracks of depression, low self-esteem, insecurity, and fear. All of these things threatened my spiritual foundation. By praying, studying God‟s word, and applying it to my everyday life, and its challenges, I am now able to build up my spiritual house and look at myself in the mirror with confidence.

“Devyn Quinn writes compelling characters, a chilling and gripping story, and a setting that is easily seen within your mind’s eye.” —Rogues and Romance Reviews

As Julienne struggles to save the man she loves from utter and eternal ruin, she must delve into her own dark powers at the risk of forsaking her sanity.

As Morgan and Julienne steel themselves to do battle with his greatest inner demons and those who would deny him his legacy, they must confront the very real threat that his fragmented psyche will lead him to the edge of self-destruction—and the destruction of all they hold dear, both in this world and in their hearts.

Having a moderately successful business and two grown up children, Fiona thought her life was fairly settled. She was unprepared for the impact that her husbands purchase of an old fishing boat would have. Shemaron: A Beautiful Endeavour is the story of her growing involvement on a practical and historical level whilst dealing with the inevitable frustrations of renovating an old boat. The turbulent and intimate interaction between fishermen and the sea is often considered alongside personal observations made from the deck of the ring net boat Shemaron. Poetical prose and historical interludes are woven into accounts of voyages undertaken whilst she and her husband have enjoyed guardianship of this historical boat.

Two headstrong women in their forties coming from different moral directions clash within the confines of a French-Canadian mill town in northern Rhode Island's Blackstone Valley. Their narratives relate how an heirloom quiche recipe and baking rivalry redress misconceptions, misdeeds, and maliciousness which wreak havoc on those caught in the crossfire of a tragedy precipitated by reckless conduct.

Augusta Bergeron: Dysfunctional.  Deceptive. Demure.  More than meets the eye at face value and stuck in a holding pattern, the town siren engages in morally destructive behavior she attributes to maternal abandonment until she eggs-humes her mother's quiche recipe.

Lindsay Metcalfe: Pedigreed.  Privileged. Proper. Mourning the recent death of her mother, the historian-in-residence hailing from Boston sets out to preserve the legacy of an impoverished mill, but gets more than she bargains for all around.

Treated as an equal, he teaches her that tender, generous, mutually satisfying sex can be enjoyed by both partners

.
Sarah puts the pain and guilt of her past behind her until her sister Carol asks for help with a neighbor who is desperate to escape her husband’s abuse, with the added danger of a standing hitman contract should anything happen to him.
